The outfit question causes more stress than any other part of a family photo session. I get it. You are coordinating multiple people with different body types, ages, and opinions about clothes. And nobody wants to be the family in matching white shirts and khakis.

After hundreds of family sessions in Chico and Northern California, here is my complete guide to looking amazing as a family without the drama.

The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits look dated. They also make everyone look the same size and shape, which is rarely flattering. What looks incredible in modern family photography is a coordinated color palette where everyone’s outfit works together without being identical.

Think of your family as a cast in a movie. Each person has their own wardrobe, but everything feels like it belongs in the same scene.

How to Build a Family Color Palette in 4 Steps

Step 1: Pick an anchor outfit. Usually mom’s, since women’s clothing tends to have more color options. Choose something you feel amazing in.

Step 2: Pull 3 to 4 colors from that outfit. If mom is wearing a rust colored dress, your palette might be rust, cream, olive, and denim.

Step 3: Distribute those colors across the family. Dad gets olive and cream. Oldest kid gets denim with rust accents. Youngest gets cream with olive. Nobody matches exactly, but everyone coordinates.

Step 4: Add texture. Knit sweaters, denim jackets, corduroy pants, linen shirts. Texture adds visual depth and makes photos feel rich instead of flat.

Palettes That Always Work

Warm Neutrals

Cream, tan, rust, olive, brown. Works in literally every season and location. This is the safest choice if you are unsure.

Cool Tones

Navy, gray, dusty blue, white, sage. Clean, classic, timeless. Looks stunning in winter and spring.

Earth Tones

Mustard, forest green, burgundy, camel. Peak fall vibes. If your session is September through November, this palette is unbeatable.

Bold and Modern

Black, white, and one pop color (red, yellow, cobalt). Striking, fashion forward, and works especially well in urban or downtown settings.

Tips by Family Member

Women and Moms

  • Dresses and skirts photograph beautifully because they add movement
  • Avoid bodycon styles that restrict movement (you will be picking up kids, sitting on the ground, chasing a toddler)
  • Defined waistlines are universally flattering
  • Heels look great but bring flats for walking between spots

Men and Dads

  • A well fitted button down with sleeves rolled to the forearms is the universal dad cheat code
  • Chinos or dark jeans. Never cargo shorts.
  • Layers help: blazer, vest, open flannel
  • Clean shoes. Boots or clean sneakers, not flip flops.

Kids

  • Comfortable above all else. An uncomfortable kid is a cranky kid, and a cranky kid does not smile.
  • Skip anything with itchy tags, tight collars, or stiff fabric
  • Let their personality show. If your kid lives in cowboy boots, put them in cowboy boots.
  • Bring a backup outfit for toddlers. Spills are inevitable.

Babies

  • Keep it simple. A onesie or romper in a coordinating color is perfect.
  • Barefoot babies are adorable in photos. Skip the tiny shoes.
  • Bring a bib for drool management between shots.
  • Layers in case it gets cool during an evening session.

What to Avoid

  • Logos and graphics. They date your photos instantly and draw the eye away from faces.
  • Neon anything. It reflects color onto skin and everything nearby.
  • All black everything. You lose all detail and texture. One family member in black is fine. The whole family in black is a funeral.
  • Brand new unworn clothes. Wear it around the house first. Make sure it fits the way you expect when you sit, stand, and move.
  • Too matchy matchy. All wearing the same color reads as a uniform, not a family.

Seasonal Outfit Ideas for Chico

Spring (March to May): Pastels, soft colors, light layers. Floral dresses for mom, light denim for dad, soft neutrals for kids. Perfect with almond orchard backdrops or green Bidwell Park.

Summer (June to August): Light fabrics, bright colors, sun dresses. Keep it breezy since Chico summer evenings can still be warm. Linen and cotton breathe well.

Fall (September to November): Rich tones, cozy textures, layers. This is the season made for family photos. Rust, olive, mustard, burgundy. Sweaters, scarves, boots. Golden grass and warm light.

Winter (December to February): Deep colors, chunky knits, layered outfits. Plaid scarves, wool coats, boots. The bare trees and moody skies create stunning backdrops for warm, rich outfit tones.
