Family Photography in Chico, California
Your kids are only this age for about five minutes. That is what it feels like anyway.
Family sessions with North Rim Photography capture your family exactly as you are right now. The chaos, the love, the tiny hands, the eye rolls from the teenager. All of it. Because all of it matters.
Why Family Photos Matter
You Think You Will Remember. You Won’t.
Not all of it. Not the way their hair fell. Not the way the little one insisted on being carried everywhere. Not the exact shade of mischief in their eyes at age four. Memory softens the details over time. Photos keep them sharp.
The families who do annual sessions always say the same thing: the collection becomes more valuable every single year. Because the kids change so fast. What felt like “just another Tuesday” becomes priceless when you realize that version of your family is gone.
And here is the part parents don’t expect: your kids will grow up seeing their family on the wall. Research shows that children who see family photos displayed in their home develop a stronger sense of belonging and higher self esteem. It sounds simple because it is.
Print them. Frame them. Put your family on the wall.

What to Expect
Your Family Session Experience
Before Your Session
We start with a conversation about your family, your style, and your goals. I will help you coordinate outfits (coordinate, never match), choose the perfect location, and time everything around naps, meals, and energy levels.
During Your Session
Sessions run 30 to 90 minutes. Here is the honest flow:
- First 5 to 10 minutes: Everyone warms up. I am shooting loosely. These candid shots are often the best.
- Next 15 to 20 minutes: Group shots. Full family, parents together, siblings. The ones grandma wants. Done while energy is highest.
- Next 15 to 20 minutes: Individual combos and candid play. Mom with each kid. Dad with each kid. Siblings being siblings.
- Final 10 to 15 minutes: Golden light magic. The dreamy, glowy shots that make people ask “how did you get that light?”
After Your Session
Sneak peeks within 48 hours. Full gallery delivered in 2 to 3 weeks via your private online gallery. Every image is professionally edited and ready to download, share, and print.

What to Wear
Family Outfit Coordination Made Simple
The golden rule: coordinate, don’t match. The days of everyone in white shirts and khakis are over.
How to build a family palette in 4 steps:
- Pick an anchor outfit (usually mom’s)
- Pull 3 to 4 colors from that outfit
- Distribute those colors across the family
- Add texture: knit sweaters, denim, corduroy, linen
Palettes that always work:
- Warm neutrals: cream, tan, rust, olive, brown
- Cool tones: navy, gray, dusty blue, white, sage
- Earth tones: mustard, forest green, burgundy, camel
- Bold and modern: black, white, and one pop color
Quick tips by family member:
- Kids: Dress them in something comfortable. An uncomfortable kid is a cranky kid.
- Babies: Keep it simple. A onesie in a coordinating color is perfect. Barefoot babies are adorable.
- Dad: A well fitted button down with sleeves rolled to the forearms is the universal dad cheat code.

Preparing Your Kids
Real Talk by Age Group
- Toddlers (1 to 3): You cannot pose a toddler. Nap first, snacks second, let them explore third. The best photos are them running, picking up rocks, or chasing bubbles.
- Young Kids (4 to 8): The sweet spot. Make it a game, give them a job, promise ice cream after. Works every time.
- Tweens and Teens (9+): Self conscious and possibly not thrilled. Involve them in outfit planning, give them solo shots, use humor, remove all pressure.
- Pets: Bring the dog! Exercise them first, bring high value treats, bring a handler, and do pet shots first while energy is high.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my kids won’t cooperate?
They don’t need to. I am not looking for perfect poses from children. I am looking for real moments. A kid laughing, running, being carried, even mid tantrum, these are the photos parents treasure most.
What is the best time of year for family photos?
Fall (September through November) is the most popular. But every season has its beauty. Spring blossoms, summer golden fields, winter moodiness. Year round works.
How far in advance should I book?
2 to 3 weeks minimum. For fall sessions, book in August. For holiday card photos, book October or early November.
Can we include grandparents or extended family?
The 90 minute Extended Session is perfect for this. Enough time for big group shots plus smaller family combinations.
What if someone is having a bad day?
We roll with it. A parent comforting a crying child is one of the most genuine, loving images that exists. We take breaks when needed. The session will be great.
Do you do mini sessions?
Yes. The 30 minute Mini Session is great for families who want updated photos without a longer time commitment.
