You just found out you are pregnant (congratulations!), and at some point between the excitement and the morning sickness, you will wonder: when should I book maternity photos?

The answer is simpler than most people think, but the timing matters more than you would expect. Here is everything you need to know about planning your maternity session in Chico, California.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos

The sweet spot: 28 to 34 weeks.

At this stage, your bump is beautifully round and unmistakable. You still have energy and mobility. You are far enough along that the photos clearly celebrate pregnancy, but early enough that you are not too uncomfortable to enjoy the session.

Here is the breakdown by trimester:

Second trimester (14 to 27 weeks): You feel great, but the bump may not be prominent enough for maternity photos, especially in clothes. Some moms with their first baby do not show significantly until 28+ weeks.

Early third trimester (28 to 34 weeks): The ideal window. Beautiful bump, manageable energy, and you can still move comfortably through different poses and locations.

Late third trimester (35+ weeks): Still possible and still beautiful, but you may be more tired, swollen, and limited in mobility. If you are past 35 weeks and have not booked yet, do not stress. We will make it work. I just adjust the session pace to keep you comfortable.

When to Actually Book

Book your session during your second trimester, even though you will not shoot until the third. This gives us time to plan the details: location, wardrobe, timing, and any family members joining. It also guarantees your preferred date, especially during popular seasons (fall and spring book up quickly in Chico).

If you want both maternity and newborn sessions, booking them together early ensures continuity and you can ask about bundled pricing.

What to Wear

The goal is to highlight your bump and make you feel beautiful. Here are guidelines that work for every body type:

  • Form fitting fabrics show off the bump shape. Bodycon dresses, fitted maxi dresses, and snug tops all photograph well.
  • Flowy dresses with waist definition create movement and romance. A dress that cinches above the bump and flows below is universally flattering.
  • Solid colors in rich tones keep the focus on you. Earth tones, jewel tones, and soft neutrals are stunning. Avoid busy patterns.
  • Layers and accessories add dimension. A sheer kimono, open cardigan, or draped fabric can create beautiful movement in photos.

Not sure what to wear? I help every client plan their wardrobe during our pre session consultation. I know exactly what photographs well at our local Chico locations in every season.

Where to Shoot in Chico

Chico and Northern California offer gorgeous options for maternity sessions:

Bidwell Park is the most versatile option. Lower Park has lush greenery and easy access (important when you are 32 weeks pregnant). Upper Park adds drama with rocky landscapes and creek settings.

Almond orchards in bloom (late February to early March) create a magical, ethereal backdrop. If your timing lines up, this is a once a year opportunity.

Golden grass fields at sunset are warm, dreamy, and effortlessly beautiful. Available from late spring through fall throughout Butte County.

Your home is an underrated choice. Nursery photos, bedroom shots with natural light, and backyard sessions create deeply personal images. Lifestyle maternity sessions at home are some of the most meaningful galleries I deliver.

Should Your Partner Be There?

Yes. Even if they claim to be “bad at photos.”

Including your partner creates images you will both treasure. The two of you together, hands on the bump, forehead to forehead, laughing about something. These are not just maternity photos. They are the last photos of your family before everything changes.

I coach couples through every pose, so nobody feels lost or awkward. Within 10 minutes, even the most camera shy partners are relaxed and natural.

Can You Bring Your Kids?

Absolutely. Sibling photos with the bump are some of the sweetest images you will ever own. A toddler kissing the belly. An older kid with their hand on the bump. These moments are priceless.

For sessions with kids, I recommend the 60 or 90 minute options so we have time for family combinations plus just you.

What if You Do Not Feel Beautiful?

This is the most common concern I hear from expecting moms. And I completely understand it. Pregnancy changes your body in ways that can feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

Here is what I can tell you after photographing dozens of maternity sessions: every single mom is surprised by how beautiful their photos turn out. Every one. The combination of professional lighting, guided posing, and a photographer who knows how to celebrate the pregnant form creates images that change how you see yourself.

You are not just “getting through” pregnancy. You are creating life. That is extraordinary, and it shows.

Session Options

Maternity sessions at North Rim Photography start at $350 for a 30 minute mini session. The most popular option is the 60 minute Standard Session ($550), which includes 1 to 2 locations and 2 outfit changes.
